What's your ecological footprint???

An ecological footprint is a measurement that tells you how much impact an individual or a population has on the environment. It is based on different aspects of daily life such as diet, place were you live (downtown, traditional neighbourhood, etc.), recycling, water waste and more stuff. For example, the average Ecological Footprint for a Chinese person is 1.8 gha per capita, which is quite low! On the contrary, the average in the USA is of 9.0 gha. I did a little test to see which was mine and the result was like an average: 5 gha , it told me that if everyone lived as I do, we would need 1.28 planets earth to sustain life!!! I'm around the national average in Argentina. I was shocked to see that although I try to do my best by turning off lights, trying no to waste water, my footprint is still quite high. I will try to improve and maybe in some years, take the test again. Now tell me: What's YOUR Ecological Footprint??? Do you feel proud about it?

hey juanma!

would be interesting to see :O

maybe you can post a link to an ecological footprint calculator website? I see there's a difference between carbon footprint & global footprint as well.

Yes, sorry Henko, my bad, I forgot: http://www.myfootprint.org/. Yes, there's a difference, the ecological footprint does not only consider the carbon footprint, it goes wider...You will see if you take the test :)

hmm, found this thread again with a link from juanma :)

If everyone would live like me, we would need 1.58 earths (24,84gha). In fact higher than Juan, but even much better than my countrys average.

But there are even some points which are not really necessary for me. Especially collecting rainwater. In fact all the water we use in Tyrol rained down about 2-20years ago and was collected and purified by our mountains.

My result shocks me a little bit, although I knew before I won't use less than one earth... Nevertheless, I can try to make it better.

If everybody would live like me we would need 1.6 earths!!! I am really shocked.

But when I saw the average of Germany, I was surprised: I'am much better than this. Now I feel how many is to do to help the environment and stop the climatic change! Now I will try to improve my ecological footprint, because I can't feel proud about this. It is time to act!

Fortunately there are some hints to reduce my footprint Smile
