TIA? No way

South Africa is a truly amazing place...and I won\'t EVER be convinced otherwise.

Well, since we won the bid for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, things have been changing over here.  It\'s like the whole country is gearing up, and suddenly rooting for ourselves for a change.

A year or two ago, I must admit, I was one of the majority of sceptics.  I did not think we would have EVER been able to host the 2010 and let it run smoothly, and convince the everyone that we are a world-class country.  Man, how wrong I was!  I kept saying, no matter how much I love this country, I just can\'t see it working.  We have too many issues, political, social and economical.  Furthermore I just told myself, don\'t get your hopes up, you\'ve been proven wrong before, remember TIA.  Bullshit!  I\'m sorry This Is Africa?  South Africa does not conform to the perceptions of the rest of Africa.  We are a country on our own, single, and boy, are we a force to be reckoned with!

Within a year, our crime stats have decreased.  Which is major, because it\'s unbelievably high.  Our economy has been stable, when the rest of the world economies are crumbling around us.  We haven\'t felt a thing!  Allright, maybe we had to pinch here and there, but all things considered, we are fine!  Our cities have been cleansed.  The street are cleaner, the beggers are fewer, the buildings are better, the parks are more, the whole infrastructure has been replaced.

In Johannesburg, our entire water infrastructure is being replaces, at a cost of R500 million.  During the above mentioned economic crisis.  That\'s saying something.  Our previously non-existant public transport system has been upgraded to such an extent that even the most harsh critics are singing the praises of the Gauride.  Not to mention the Gautrain, which is under construction.  I\'ve never seen people getting so exited about the prospect of commuting!  It\'s unbelievable, when we drive along the N1, everywhere you look, things are being built and maintained.  Our communications networking has been bumped up a few notches, and for the first time, the monopoly has been broken and service delivery is up.  Our tourism industry has been entirely remodelled, and it\'s amazing to see!  Finally, the parks and conservation areas are getting the funds and support needed to really offer a prestine environment.

But, all the happenings aside, I can say with a huge smile on my face, that for the first time EVER this country is truly united.  It\'s getting harder and harder to complain, people are more satisfied, the smiles are getting broader and the hearts are getting warmer.  We are all inspired and motivated to show the world what we are made of, and in the process, we are reminding oursleves what we are capable of.

So, please, I dare anyone to say: South Africa? Pfff TIA

    I don't know why, but I don't feel that kind of pride in my country, though most things are going great here and life is really good for most people. Maybe I love the world too much, and compared to that, home seems such an insignificant place. There are moments when I'm in nature and I see that my homeland is really, really, really beautiful, just more a lovely than a spectacular kind of beauty. But it's not pride that I feel, more like a love of home, and a feeling of "Look, world, I knew it. I live in a beautiful place, even though few people know it. Maybe one day I can make you all see it." I think few Belgians even know what a great country they live in. We're not a proud people, even though we have every reason to. I don't know why. I think when people think of Belgium, they don't think of its nature. When tourists or guests come here they come for the cities and all kinds of activities, but few ever take a quiet walk in our beautiful woods and fields and hills. But what I think is the best reason for the lack of pride is the fact that most people take what they have for granted. I think that must be it, they don't really think about it. I don't know, these are just some thoughts. I'm bad at explaining this kind of stuff ^^;

    I think the words themself mean nothing!It depends on what you think about it:Good or bad?Let's talk about the people who're fighting out there to protect the children of Africa,the people who's risking their life everyday to save people in war zones,the African origin people who've done many good things for the world,the people who're spending most of their time deep into the jungles,the bushes,the deserts,the mountains...in tough conditions to protect Africa's wildlife,or the incredible animals and tribal people of Africa themself!I know most of the time,when people say TIA,it means bad things.But it depends on you,it depends on what you know that Africa has and what the people of Africa have done for the world,and you're 1 of them.Don't think the way people think,think the way that's true and right!That's why we're proudly different from the rest of the world!
    So in those cases,if i were you,i'd be so damn proud to say TIA=THIS IS MY HOMELAND!Like i often say TIV for my proudly country in Asia!

    I really keep my fingers crossed for South Africa :) It is great that you will host 2010 Soccer World Cup because you have a chance to show that Africa is not worse than Europe, Americas or anz other continent. Everz countrz should have a chance to organiye such an event ! Just like Poland and Ukraine will organiye EURO 2012. A lot of people did not believe we would manage but I believe we will. Of course there are some problems with organization but still, organizing such an event is not only a great success but also a chance to develop in a short period of time.
