Diver in Indonesia

Over 70% of Indonesian territory is water. It has been called the centre of biodiversity and one of the most magically places on earth. I have been doing some research on Indonesia and this is some of what I have found:

Ichthyologists have documented more than 3500 species of fish and the region also supports high levels of endemism - animals found nowhere else. The area has oceanic walls, submerged reefs, canyons and even underwater volcanoes. More than 14% of the world's coral reefs are found along Indonesia's coastline. 75 % of the world's hard corals have been recorded there...WOW! Indonesia supports all major reef environments - fringing, barrier and coral atolls but the dominant reef type is fringing reef. The water there is so hot...similar to that of places I've dived in Thailand....about 27-29 degrees C. The visibility is amazing. It ranges between 15m-30m.

There are however places in Indonesia with very strong currents where divers are required to carry and surface marker buoy and use reef hooks. This is not a problem as I have a lot of experience diving in extreme current and surge here in South Africa on Reefs like Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks. Often one can cover a 4.5km reef in under 20mins as drift diving is common practice here. I would love to be part of the Indonesian Island expedition as I want to be part of the group of people who make plans to protect these amazing reefs.

Thats why I think YEP is such an important site....YOUNG PEOPLE SO EAGER TO LEARN about a host of subjects to protect the planet....EDUCATION....EDUCATION.......EDUCATION .......!!!!!!!!!! The more we know about how our enviroment works and how it affects us PERSONALLY....the more we would protect it !!!!! I wonder if anyone has ever explained to the fishernen ......and perhaps demonstrated alternative fishing methods to them ????????
I know that I have changed my behaviour since I have learnt that i can make a difference to the planet !!!!................Perhaps the Pangea trip to Indonesia will investigate ways to educate the fisherman ???!!!!
