Dieting saves the hungry!!!
872 days ago 4 comments Categories: Tags:

Sooo it's swimsuit season, the mention of which makes most of girls want to hide under our blankets until and wait for the end!!  BUT I have recently found a very interesting and purely genius way of dieting, while, of course, making a difference!!

Hunger has always been central to life in Africa, and helping out the hungry always seemed like such a daunting task!  "How will I ever be able to change ALL this?"  I thought, "it's just too much!"  But then I read a startling statistic that was revealed at the Rome summit on global food crisis - held in 2008.  According to FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf to eradicate WORLD hunger it will take approximately US$ 30 billion a year.  Now that seems like a HUGE amount of money, right??  Wrong!!  He then continued to say that the world spent US$ 1200 billion on arms!  But the most startling was that US$ 100 billion was WASTED - how?  Everytime you throw away that apple with the brown spot, or that piece of toast you were meanning to eat but just never got around to!  Food wastage accounted for US$ 100 billion in 2008!  Furthermore, excess consumption by the world's obese accounted for US$ 20 million in 2008.

So, my genius plan is as follows:  Calculate what your average budget for monthly groceries is.  Then go do grocery-shopping, but only buy the food you KNOW you're going to eat, and leave out anything that you don't need or will be wasted, for example - if you only need one bread, but you buy two because this one prefers the taste or if you're a family of four - buy meat accordingly, don't just buy whatever is easiest, if it's not neccesary, leave it!! (Girls, that means leaving the chocolate on the  shelf!!)  You'd be surprised to see how much less you spend!!  Then, do the right thing and DONATE the money you saved!!  Or if you want to, go buy some nutritious food (like whole wheat bread or vegetables) and go give it to the hungry - go to the beggar you usually avoid, take a trip to a soup-kitchen or an orphanage!

I can promise you that not only will you look great, you'll feel even better knowing that you helped one of the 862 million people who go hungry worldwide, everyday!

Let me know how it works out for you!

Blessings!

Carlien. great one. I did think about it, but never actually realized how sad the statistics are.

I am starting 'personal project' of saving food and eating only as much as needed. Will see how much food I can save for the beggars.

btw it is always good to give the hungry beggar food instead of donating money,. remember, that many of them are often addicted to alcohol or drugs, and although being hungry they would spend the money on alcohol. Therefore when you give them your sandwich and they are happy for it, you know that they really are hungry, not just want some alcohol.

I agree with Pawel, your blogs are very inspiring and easy to follow. They're also really convincing, I think you should become a journalist or so!
In our village, there are no stores, and we tend to keep to much food which we end up not using.
Food for thought... I'll definitely try to improve!

do you know the movie WE FEED THE WORLD... in it they say that in vienna the biggest city of austria every day so much bread is thrown away as you would need to feed the whole population of graz the second biggest city of austria... isn't that crazy?

so you can imagine how much that is....

I always love to read your blogs! I would even dare to say you have the best blogs in the whole YEP community!
The problem of hunger is definitely one of the greatest ones that the modern world has to face and we cannot pretend that it doesn't exist at all! The fact that we do not suffer because of that doesn't mean that we are allowed to ignore it. Even if we are lucky enough not to worry about what we are going to eat the next day, we mustn't forget about millions of people worldwide that suffer from hunger every day.
It is terrible how much food is wasted- even in Poland a lot of food is wasted because big food concerns prefer to put the overproduction to the waste dump instead of giving it to orphanages or to the homeless.
